Oil driller taps
into a simpler web
Background
Mosaic Oil is an Australian oil and gas exploration company and
an emerging energy producer that uses innovative technology to locate
and exploit reserves in South-East Queensland and offshore.
The company’s first contact with HyperSphere
(then known as KDC) was prompted by a crisis: its web-hosting company
had ceased business without notice and with inadequate records to
enable immediate redirection of the website to a new server.
Our quick and efficient resolution of this problem
was the beginning of an ongoing and productive working relationship
that has since seen a significant upgrade of its online image and
its communications with shareholders and the community.
Challenge
The first-generation website that we inherited was thin on content,
less-than-intuitive to navigate, and cumbersome to maintain. Crucially,
it had previously relied on a custom interface for the addition
of Stock Exchange Announcements, which was not transferable.
A later request to redesign the website completely
led to a thorough review of the company’s online objectives,
in collaboration with its public relations consultant. Key requirements
included:
|
 |
Providing shareholders with direct access from
the home page to a large amount of information, including a gallery
of images and video clips |
 |
Enabling Mosaic Oil staff to update sections containing
frequently changing information |
 |
Updating the website look and feel in line with
the company’s recently redesigned print identity |
 |
Improving the site’s accessibility via search-engines. |
| |
|
| Solution
Immediate interventions that got the old website up and running
again within a couple of days included:
|
 |
Retrieval and repair of domain name records to
allow redirection of the website |
 |
Reconstruction of the Stock Exchange Announcements
section of the website |
 |
Provision of a simple, interim publishing routine
that allowed the client to publish announcements directly to the web
server. |
| |
|
In
the complete redesign, vidual and functional requirements were met
in a range of ways:
|
 |
The extensive and complex
information structure was accommodated through a multi-level site
navigation, using a combination of top tabs, a main navigation bar
and panels for special topics. Each internal screen features a comprehensive
index of other screens in the same section. |
 |
A site map was also included. |
 |
The updated corporate
graphic style was introduced, replacing heavy, coloured screen backgrounds
with more contemporary use of white space. |
 |
The site redesign abandoned
the use of framed pages, increasing its visibility to search-engines. |
| |
|
| Macromedia
Contribute was selected as the most appropriate Content
Management System (CMS), providing a low-cost yet flexible and scalable
tool for updating selected content without any requirement for technical
web skills. This allows Mosaic Oil staff to add Stock Exchange Announcements
as news breaks, and to publish financial reports, without reliance
on external assistance. |
